21st November 2020 - Roger's Epic Solo Lockdown Ironman

Roger should have been racing his first Ironman in Portugal earlier this month (and only his second triathlon ever) but because of COVID-19, his race was cancelled. So, Roger decided it would be a good idea to have a crack at doing the distance all on his own, in Manchester, in November.

Roger braved 10.5 degree water in Salford Quays completing the full distance swim (2.4 miles) in just over 1 hour 16 minutes.

After taking some time to de-frost in his girlfriend’s car, he headed out on his bike. Despite an inevitable but expected “dark moment” on the bike, Roger ploughed on to finish the full distance bike leg (112 miles) in 7 hours, 15 minutes.

Roger then headed out for a little 26.2 mile run on the streets and canals of Manchester. Feeling strong for the first 13 miles, Roger, like all Ironman first timers, then found his limit both mentally and physically, but dug deep to finish the whole run in just over 4 hours 30 minutes stating that the last 6 miles were “the hardest physical thing he had ever done”.

It’s hard enough in a proper event when you have the crowds, a finish line and a medal to drag you over that finish line, but to do it on your own without that support – now that’s something special.

Roger did so well, it was worthy of a mention on the IM Talk Podcast! Way to go Roger!
